Is The Dark Night Inappropriate for Kids

I mentioned before that we took our kids to see The Dark Knight over the weekend. We actually took our whole family, including our six-year-old and our two eight-year-olds. And all of them loved it. My daughter would have been happier at the American Girl movie, but she stilled like “Batman” anyway. Our youngest kept [...]

Funny old Mink Baby!

Oh little Minka, you have changed a lot over the last couple of weeks and you are becoming more entertaining (and more challenging) by the minute, or so it seems.

Where to begin!

You are running everywhere, with a jerky, flat-footed little gait that is quite charming (and which appears quite drunken). You fall over all the time, but mostly quite safely - you just plop down on your bum and then get up again, unpeturbed and carry on.

You climb up on the sofa (and almost anything else that presents itself as having the slightest bit of climbing potential) and although you do need watching (because sometimes you don't seem to realise that you will fall of and hurt yourself if you don't watch it), in general your mounting and dismounting of whatever is in sight is quite precise and well-executed, considering your age and general lack of dexterity.

You are babbling a lot more too - and I really hadn't thought that was possible. We have more actual words now too.

Ball, Bear, Babba (banana) are words that you use to refer to specific objects, and usually the correct ones.

You understand what we mean if we say: "Where's you ball?" - I know this because you then go and get it and give it to me.

Everything you want or offer up is almost always requested or given with the word "Ta" - we like good manners and you are getting quite good at it.

You enjoy being chased and make all sorts of delighted sounds.

Your favourite is an "Aaaaaaa" in the back of your throat (it sounds like someone being merrily but thoroughly sick). Mirth and/or excitement is also often accompanied by a lot of heavy breathing.

You can recognise animals as being animals, whether they are photos, pictures, soft toys or there in the flesh. You stroke the animal in question (no matter the form) and say "Aaah!" in a very loving tone. You seem to think that all animals say "woof". You know that dogs say "woof". We are working on other animal sounds but in general, "woof" is your sound of choice.

Today you even had a couple of goes at saying "Georgie", which was actually kind of thrilling - for me anyway.

As gentle as you (generally) are with animals, when you get tired or frustrated, you can be quite violent. You pinch, scratch and hit and it's definitely on purpose. I try not to be angry (or at least not to show anger) but simply say "No" firmly and then put you down and ignore you for a minute or two. Then I pick you up and praise you if you don't do it again. We'll see how that goes.

You have a bit of a cold right now, which means we've had a few broken nights but I think you are also teething (if the drool count is anything to go by!) so it's all par for the course.

But in general you are, as always, utterly fabulous.

You are happy with Nanny and Grandad while I work (and they seem happy enough with you) so all in all, things are going very well both in terms of you, and your speedy evolution and Mamapalooza, which is also getting along nicely.

I finally started facing up to looking into being a sole trader today - tax returns, self assessment, NI, VAT and all that jazz. Not as bad as I thought, I am pleased to report. The information provided by the government is actually quite well put together (so far).

I just need more hours in the day. No change there then.

But I am very very happy (if a little tired).

And on that note, night night little Mink Baby,

xxx

I’m happy to report some good news out of this horrifying tale of the baby that was cut from his mother’s womb and no one could figure out who his mother was.  For right now it is a big secret who has the baby, but I’m guessing if they were able to figure out who [...]
